NYE 2019 Events - Sydney

Christmas is supposed to be the happiest time of the year, but for sheer colour and spectacle, it’s hard to go past New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney. There are loads of NYE events across the city and places to see Sydney fireworks. Here are a few of our favourites.

1. Fun for all the family

Cockatoo Island is supremely located in the middle of all the action. Look east for the city fireworks, look west for local fireworks – there’s action wherever you turn. This one is suitable for kiddies and there’s the chance to camp (or glamp) overnight. This means you can watch the 9pm fireworks with the kids, put them to bed in the tent, and sit outside with family and friends, bottle of champers, snacks at hand, waving sparklers, as you watch the midnight rockets burst overhead.

2. Book a place at other city vantage points

Depending on your need for personal space, you could choose a hard core city venue like Bradfield Park under the bridge, Campbells Cove and Dawes Point at The Rocks, Darling Harbour, Bradleys Head at Mosman, East Circular Quay, Mrs Macquarie’s Point, and the Sydney Opera House.

Alternatively head out a little further to places like Birchgrove, Manly, Balmain East, or Greenwich. These range in price and you’ll need to get there early to reserve a space.

Either way, you can take the kids. Bring a rug, food and drinks to keep the little ones fed and watered. Keep in mind that there will be people everywhere, so a quick exit will be challenging.

If you’ve got money to spare, there are five events in the Botanic Garden but only two have tickets remaining - Garden Party at the Calyx (18+, $595 per ticket), Harbour Hoopla (kid friendly, $350 a ticket).

New Year’s Eve in the Park is also adults only and features a stellar line-u including Hermitude, Girl Talk (USA), Crooked Colours, Safia, Client Liaison, and Sneaky Sound System. It’s located at Victoria Park.

3. Celebrate in style…on the harbour

Join the thousands of boats that will be floating away under the stars in the harbour on New Year’s Eve.
Some are kid friendly – others which are booze cruises, as they’re affectionately known, can be fun but they’re strictly adults only. This is a bucket list activity for many – with fireworks flashing overhead, it’ll be a night to remember.

4. Kick up your heels at the Luna Park Harbour Party!

Luna Park Harbour Party celebrates it’s 15th birthday this year with headline artist Hot Tub Time Machine playing a two-hour party set, along with Example, Thandi Phoenix and Casual Connection.
This is an 18+ event. Tickets are still available.

5. Host the perfect party yourself!

If all else fails, ask for a projector from Santa for Christmas, rig up a sheet in the backyard, and live stream the fireworks from the official site with a synchronised soundtrack on radio. Visit the official Sydney New Year’s Eve site for details.

Invite friends over or keep it close with family. Added bonus? Easy access to a clean toilet, no fighting your way through traffic and public transport to get home, and the littles can sleep in their own comfortable beds whenever they’re ready.
